I recently saw a quote, and I had to pause. It said,
“You cannot think your way out of depression; you need to move your way out.”
I thought Wow- this is so true. Sitting around “thinking” more by yourself is NOT the answer.
During the winter months, many of us find ourselves locked up in our houses often. And I have taken that quote and activated.
On cold days when I am in my comfy clothes sitting on the couch, and I start to feel the heaviness of loneliness, or the weight of the life I am living starts to “press” upon me, I get up, put my workout clothes on, and go to the gym.
And move.
No more sitting in pity parties. It is time to move.
Today the kids went back to school. I had some meetings in the morning, was still in my comfy clothes, and had a few hours before my next meeting. I opened my front door to feel the temperature outside, and oh my goodness, 62 degrees and sunny. It is time to move.
I got myself dressed, did my hair and make-up, and went to my favorite local coffee shop and sat in the sunshine outside. Maybe even got a sunburn!
There are natural needs that we have as humans, and the more we neglect our natural needs, the more anxiety, depression, unhappiness, sickness, fear, dread, and apathy we will have.
We need to move. EVERYDAY.
We need sunshine.
We need people.
We need purpose. You need your “why”. A reason for living. Something greater than YOU.
You need to belong. You need a place, a group, a church, somewhere to belong.
You need equal parts hard work, rest, and play.
Think about when you first have a baby. What are the things you do to raise that baby in the healthiest way possible? We feed it, we allow the baby to sleep and nap, we get outside and play, and we encourage development. Then we do it again, we eat, play, and sleep.
My dears, we can’t just work. We can’t just sleep. We can’t just play. We can’t just eat. Right? We need the balanced cycles, rhythms, and sequences that are embedded in everything around us; nature shows us the way.
It’s a New Year, a great time of motivation to see and do things differently. Let’s do it together. Let’s grow, let’s rest, let’s eat, let’s play, let’s pray, and let’s MOVE… Let’s MOVE our way into a healthier, happier, more fulfilling existence. One “step” at a time.

Heart to Yours
