I recently had a coworker, Mike, tell me about his personal counseling session. After explaining the issues and problems he was facing in life, the counselor asked one poignant question.
He stared at the counselor, wide-eyed, and a bit taken back. He gulped, “I don’t know.”
I was on a phone call with another coworker Sue, and she was talking about some of her recent accomplishments. If she got the new position she wanted, finally getting the respect she desired, seeing all her education and accomplishments finally recognized, and if she received the salary she wanted, how satisfying it would be. The conversation turned in such a way that I could hear her expressing her identity through all the things she does, or her achievements and accomplishments, and through her title or position. Because of my relationship with Sue, I could hear something behind what she was saying.
I affirmed Sue that, all those things are great, but they will never ever be enough. They will never satisfy. They will leave her constantly chasing the next “thing”. I then turned the question to her, “If I were to ask you, “Who is Sue?” what would you say?” She said “I don’t know. I could tell you the things I Do, but I don’t know “Who I Am.”
I was sitting with an African leader, and I asked her, “What do you feel are some of the needs in your country among your young people?” She began to express this hole and deep need for her people to understand “Who They Are.”
Have you ever considered this question? Not the typical, “So what do you do?” But, the deeper fundamental, foundational question, “Who Are You?”
Do you know this is the foundation that produces all our behaviors, habits, patterns, and results? It all starts with knowing WHO WE ARE. It starts with what we believe about ourselves.
The Priceless Project uses this foundation to help girls and women towards wholeness. It starts with diving deep into understanding “Who YOU are.” From our identity we produce our beliefs, and how we think, what we think produces our behaviors or what we do. And the cycle continues.
“Your behaviors are usually a reflection of your identity. What you do is an indication of the type of person you believe you are” Atomic Habits- James Clear.
It is always an interesting practice to dissect a conflict, a habit, or a response you are having to a situation and trace it back. What am I thinking about this situation or what thought is linked to this action, and then go back a step further, what do I believe about myself, the world, or others that is producing this thought? So often you will find the belief can be pretty profound and sometimes shocking when you unveil the belief that is fueling this thought, which then produces, actions or behaviors.
Start today! Ask yourself the question… “Who Am I?” Can you answer it? Can you write down a list of what makes you, YOU?
I am with you on the journey towards wholeness as we discover the beauty of Who We ARE.
