I have a deep desire to have riches. I grew up rockin’ to the Calloway song “I wanna be rich!” And this is America and what we do right- acquire wealth in the land of opportunity.
In my old age of 41, I am starting to see some things more clearly.
There are only 24 hours in a day and only one of me. So each day I by my choices and value system decide what I am going to give my life to… a.k.a my time.
The glimmer of fiscal treasures allures many of us, and we give lots and lots of time, energy, and attention to accumulating as much as possible.
In the pursuit of sexy wealth, more obscure riches can be neglected, not cultivated, or attended to in the same way.
Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE having all the dollar bills I need to pursue my dreams, to provide options, and to allow me comforts and luxuries. Money in its fiscal form is simply a tool for trade. My older brother Joel Coggins once said, “Why would God not provide me with all the TOOLS I need to accomplish what I am called to build on this earth.” I want all the TOOLS- all of them! But I am seeing how “dollar bills”, tools, and resources come in many shapes and sizes and we would be very very wise to recognize how to cultivate wealth in our lives that looks different than just “paper.”
I have watched my sister cultivate her gift of artistry and craftsmanship in many ways, one being refurbishing furniture. She expresses her gifts in the world and resources start to flow.
People give her free furniture pieces for her to refurbish. People alert her of curbside junk, a building manager calls her when people throw away pieces at an apartment complex, and a beautiful neighbor allows her to store pieces in her garage. She doesn’t have to spend money on inventory, she has marketers promoting and supporting her, and she has no storage fees! The wealth of the wise.
I believe strongly in cultivating healthy, deep thriving relationships. These require time, energy, and attention. It requires intentionality and sacrifice. But I believe, if you invest in people you will be the richest person in the world.
Living in community requires that we make investments and deposits and our input allows for withdrawal from the pot of love in which we have invested.
I have watched the riches of life flow into my life like a river in this season and I want us all to experience this river. A river of wealth that looks like…
A call from Mr. Norval this morning asking if, “Koby wants to go Fly!?” Um, “YES!” A 14-year-old young man with the opportunity of a lifetime. Learning to fly before he can drive, being the copilot of a private plane…What! How could we be so rich?
A rich heritage of faith, builders, and dreamers, that taught me how to see beyond what is, to what can be… and those skills and love built me a home. The riches of faith and family.
A circle of friends that meet each other’s needs the best way we know how. I can’t even count the number of dinners that have been shared and prepared for me and my boys over the years. The gift of riches shaped like steak and sweet potatoes!
Men with skills and muscles have hauled things, mowed lawns, cleaned my garage, hung screens, built shelves, washed windows, fixed windows, and picked up loads and loads of debris. Mounted a TV, tiled a bathroom, put door knobs on, made phone calls to arrange help, and I have “paid” for none of it in the fiscal form. Riches shaped like drops of sweat and service.
Friends who edited and pre-read my new book “Soul Work” gave of their gift in community. A gift poured into the pot of love.
The beautiful women that have opened their ears and hearts to listen, to be there in low moments, to celebrate victories, and to encompass my life with support and lots of hugs. The riches of unconditional love.
I could go on and on recounting the ways wealth is streaming into my life through all the PEOPLE whose gifts and skills, or even just hands, have given and given and given of their time, tools, and themselves. In the same fashion, I want this for you my Dear.
I want you to see clearly the tools and resources YOU have been given, I want you to refine them, perfect them, I want you to bring all of yourself into a community and invest and give and contribute. Using all of who you are to bring life and goodness, love and beauty.
If you do this, you will never ever have to worry about if you will have what you need, no my Dear, the resources will be endless when you invest your time a.k.a. YOUR life wisely!
Riches that no man can count will surround your life. Maybe this is even a glimpse of what Jeshua was trying to teach us about the kingdom of heaven….
Like a child that depends on others, like a servant that invests wisely what has been given to him, like a father that throws a feast for a wayward son, like a woman that gives from the little she has, like a mustard seed that is so so tiny but when planted or invested in the “right” place will cause a beautiful bountiful return.
Sow your life, invest your life, and watch the riches of so much love and goodness flow like a river.
From my heart to yours
